Suzanne Carrington began her nursing career working with various units, but she always wanted to work in obstetrics. Carrington was able to get her dream job on an L and D tertiary unit. She immediately knew that this was her calling. Carrington earned her bachelor's degree from Syracuse University while working full time and also working as a research assistant on a project entitled "High Risk Pregnancy and Maternal Attachment." She then attended midwifery school at Case Western Reserve University and obtained her MSN/CNM degree. Her master's research study was on paternal-fetal attachment and Couvade Syndrome. Carrington received the Helen Lathrop Bunge Award in recognition of clinical expertise, creative ability, and social and professional responsibility. After working in Cleveland for several years in a clinic serving a poor neighborhood, she and her family moved to Pennsylvania, and then New Jersey, where she worked in a busy triage unit of a hospital that facilitated nearly 6,000 deliveries per year.

About 10 years ago, Carrington began working at North Suburban in a midwifery group that primarily cared for the underserved. She then went back to school and completed her DNP in 2010. Her doctoral research study was entitled "Teaching Indigenous Mayan Traditional Birth Attendants in the Prevention and Treatment of Postpartum Hemorrhage," based on work she completed in several villages in Guatemala.
