Brenda Owen joined the College of Nursing teaching faculty in 2009 and has been active in the clinical and didactic education of the undergraduate nursing students since then. As part of the Maternal-Child Health Division, she currently teaches the Nursing Care of Childbearing Families course to the undergraduate students. Through her years in the College of Nursing she has been involved in various task forces and is currently a member of the Undergraduate Curriculum Evaluation Committee.

Brenda obtained her undergraduate nursing degree (BSN) from Westminster College in Salt Lake City and after graduation she entered the Air Force. After working for eight years as a labor and delivery nurse she went on to obtain her Master of Nursing with a concentration in Nurse Midwifery degree (MSN) from Georgetown University. One of her most rewarding experiences during her Air Force career was being able to participate in a multi-nation medical humanitarian mission (MEDFLAG) to Uganda in 2002. As the Chief nurse, she was instrumental in leading the team to successfully provide care (medical, dental, ophthalmology/optometry) to over 3,500 Ugandan citizens in just five days of clinics. In 2009 she retired from the Air Force after a 22-year career of caring for the obstetrical and gynecological needs of military members and their families as an RN and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). While serving in the military Brenda lived all over the U.S. and in Germany and fully enjoyed all the travel opportunities that were available to her and her family.

Brenda utilizes many active learning and evidence-based teaching strategies to make the Childbearing families course fun and engaging. She enjoys sharing her knowledge, passion, and experience with the students and watching their 'Aha' moments as they make connections.

In her free time she enjoys running, reading, cross stitch, sewing, traveling, and spending time with her family.
