The Global Health Nursing Program at CU Nursing is our active commitment to equipping and training transformational leaders prepared to address disparities and inequities in healthcare delivery in the U.S. and beyond.
Active Partnerships – Guatemala
The Trifinio Center for Human Development was developed in 2011 to promote population health and sustainable development in a rural region of southwest Guatemala near the border of Chiapas, Mexico. The Center for Human Development is described as innovative and interactive in the way it provides support to mothers and their children during the first 1,000 days of their lives. It is home to a 6-room family medicine clinic, dental clinic, and pharmacy.
Site Experiences:
- Practice - Graduate students in various advanced practice nursing disciplines will have the opportunity to hone their skills working in this low-resource setting with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, health promotion, patient education, and public health. Strong skills in Spanish expected.
- Community Outreach - Preventative health care is a significant focus of this site. Child health, maternal health, and worker health seek to improve the safety and well-being of community members in Trifinio. Learners will have the opportunity to work alongside the community health nurses who provide direct patient care and educational content to mothers and their children in their homes.
- Community Development - Learners will have the opportunity to collaborate with Guatemalan nationals who are responsible for the delivery of preventative public health measures including sexual health education content in local schools.

Eligibility
Undergraduate learners are eligible to apply for this experience during their Community/Population Health Nursing course (NURS4877). This experience allows learners to complete their 64 required clinical hours for this course.
Graduate learners enrolled in FNP, PNP WHNP, CNM, or PMHNP programs can apply for this experience during their clinical courses. It is recommended that learners consult their specialty directors before applying to ensure this meets clinical requirements.
