    Four faculty named fellows

Induction takes place this fall for College of Nursing faculty and alumni

College of Nursing Marketing | College of Nursing Jul 3, 2014

The College of Nursing congratulates four faculty members who will be inducted as fellows in the American Academy of Nursing this fall: Sue Hagedorn, RN, PhD, PNP, WHNP, FAANP; Sara Horton-Deutsch, PhD, PMHCNS, RN, ANEF; Jackie Jones, PhD, BN, RN, FRCNA; and John Welton, PhD, RN. Induction is a significant career accomplishment. The American Academy of Nursing, comprised of 2,100 fellows, recognizes extraordinary nursing careers and represents some of the most highly-educated professionals in the field.

Sara Horton-Deutsch, PhD, PMHCNS, RN, ANEF

"I am honored to be selected for fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing,” Horton-Deutsch says. "As a psychiatric-mental health nurse, reflective practitioner, caritas coach, and the Watson Caring Science Endowed Chair, being a member of the academy gives me the opportunity to further increase the visibility of this work as well as bring it into broader conversations to influence health care and health policy in the areas of integrated person-centered care, wellness and recovery."

Jackie Jones, PhD, BN, RN, FRCNA

Jones is “very humbled” to be acknowledged for her research, contributions, and influences as a change agent within her adopted home of the U.S. “I am truly honored, as a passionate nurse, to be accepted into fellowship at the prestigious American Academy of Nursing.”

    John Welton, PhD, RN

Welton says: "I am honored and humbled to be inducted into the academy. I stand on the shoulders of giants."

Sue Hagedorn, RN, PhD, PNP, WHNP, FAANP

Hagedorn, an alumni of the college expressed gratitude to her education, stating, “I am forever grateful for my CU College of Nursing PhD education and my faculty mentors and colleagues. They have supported my creativity, scholarship, practice, teaching and vision. I look forward to contributing these qualities--nurtured at the College of Nursing--in my role as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.”

A retired associate professor, Hagedorn is now president of Seedwork Films where she is currently working on a documentary, “Celebrating Colorado’s Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.” Hagedorn elaborates on this endeavor, explaining that “the synthesis of nursing and documentary filmmaking has been a perfect opportunity for me to ply my art as a nurse who seeks social justice, as a documentary filmmaker who has a nursing practice. Cinema and story have the power to draw back the curtains on the human condition and make social change.”

    Special Thanks

Special thanks to the sponsors of the newly appointed fellows: Bonnie Gance-Cleveland, PhD, RNC, PNP, FAAN, and Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN (Hagedorn); Claire Draucker, PhD, RN, APRN, FAAN, professor at Indiana University, Angela Barron McBride, PhD, RN, FAAN, endowed chair at Indiana University, and Dan Pesut, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN, ACC, University of Minnesota professor and director of the Densford International Center for Leadership (Horton-Deutsch); Colleen Goode, PhD, RN, FAAN, NEA-BC (Jones); and Marilyn Krajicek, EdD, RN, FAAN, and Peter Buerhaus, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor at Vanderbilt (Welton).
