Gorton named assistant dean of undergraduate programs

College of Nursing Marketing | College of Nursing Oct 3, 2014

Karen L. Gorton, PhD, RN, MS, ATC, has been named assistant dean of undergraduate programs for the University of Colorado College of Nursing. Gorton brings much teaching experience and previous work in undergraduate programs, specifically at University of Northern Colorado. Dean Sarah Thompson says, “Karen has many strengths and will be a strong asset to our undergraduate program.”

Gorton began her career at the College of Nursing in August 2013, as assistant professor, and began her new role June 16. In addition to the various teaching positions at schools such as University of Northern Colorado, Carroll College, University of Wisconsin, Gateway Technical College, Springfield College, and Suffield Academy, Gorton has recently worked as assistant director of undergraduate programs at University of Northern Colorado. Her passion for nursing education is evident, and the previous roles she has held will contribute significantly to her success in the role of assistant dean.

Gorton says, “I am excited to be working with an amazing group of faculty, staff and students in this role.”

Gorton graduated with her PhD from University of Northern Colorado, focusing her dissertation on relationships between “critical thinking skills and clinical judgment in the nurse practitioner student.” Prior to that, she received her MSN at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and began her nursing education with a BSN from Carroll University, Columbia College of Nursing.

She hopes to excel in her position by “understanding the strengths of the faculty, the curriculum, our students and continue to produce excellent graduates who will be the leaders of tomorrow.”

In her new role, Gorton will oversee the College’s traditional (24 month), accelerated (12 month), Integrated Nurse Pathway, and online RN-BS programs. These programs have approximately 500 students enrolled.
