Congratulations to 2018 Hattie Hemschemeyer Award recipient Nancy Lowe, CNM, PhD, FACNM, FAAN, who is one of midwifery’s most accomplished and esteemed researchers to the field of nursing. Dr. Lowe developed the Childbirth Self-Efficacy Inventory, which has been used in numerous studies, and translated into multiple languages. Her research focuses on pain in labor, labor progress, and labor dystocia and previously led the formation of US midwifery researchers. She was previously the founding director of the Ohio State University midwifery education program and Elnora Thomson Distinguished Professor at Oregon Health & Sciences University. Her teaching awards include the Faculty Leadership Award from The Ohio State University College of Nursing and the Graduate School Chancellor’s Teaching Award from the University of Colorado Denver. Dr. Lowe has served on multiple boards for the American College of Nurse-Midwives and is Co-Founder of the American Academy of Nursing Maternal and Infant Health Expert Panel. Additionally, Dr. Lowe has committed to training future nurse-midwives as a mentor and is an inspirational educator and role model dedicated to the health care of women and infants. She is currently a Professor and Director of Global Nursing Education Initiatives at the University of Colorado Denver.
