Brie Thumm joined the University of Colorado College of Nursing as an Assistant Professor in the fall of 2021. She has been practicing midwifery domestically and internationally since 2001 when she completed her MSN at Yale University. She obtained her MBA in health care administration at Baruch College in New York City and her PhD in health systems research at University of Colorado College of Nursing because she was frustrated with seeing patients receive sub-optimal care and midwives become disillusioned because of breakdowns in the healthcare system. Her primary area of research is provider well-being and perinatal workforce development. Her methodologic focus is instrument development and psychometric evaluation. Her doctoral study was the first national study of midwifery burnout in the US and development of the Midwifery Practice Climate Scale.

Prior to coming to the College, Brie provided care at Planned Parenthood of New York City, served as the Assistant Director of the Sexual Assault Response Team for the Manhattan public hospitals, conducted mental and behavioral health research at the Rocky Mountain Regional Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, and led the clinical and research arms of the Maternal Mortality Prevention Program at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. She’s been catching babies at Denver Health since 2009.
