Joanne Clavelle, DNP, RN, NEA – BC, FAAN is Assistant Professor of Clinical Teaching for the University of Colorado College of Nursing. She is also Chief Executive Officer of Clavelle Consulting based Arvada, Colorado. Prior to this, Dr. Clavelle served as Regional Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer – West for GetWellNetwork, an interactive patient care technology company, providing clinical collaboration and advisement to senior leadership and nursing teams in over 50 hospitals and health systems in the Western United States. For nine years prior to this, Dr. Clavelle served as a Chief Nursing Officer in several health systems, most recently as system Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for Scottsdale Healthcare, and later HonorHealth, responsible for nursing oversight of over 3,400 nurses at its five Magnet-designated hospitals in both Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Clavelle also served as Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer for St. Luke’s Health System, Treasure Valley, in Boise, Idaho, a five-time designated ANCC Magnet® organization, Vice President of Ancillary Services at the University of Vermont Medical Center, and seven years with VHA Inc. in clinical and community health leadership roles, working with over 60 hospitals in seven states across the northwestern U.S. In this role, Dr. Clavelle contributed to creating national community benefit guidelines in collaboration with the Catholic Health Association, which stemmed from her earlier work in catalyzing the creation of a healthy cities initiative, The Champlain Initiative, in Burlington, Vermont, addressing the community’s economic security and environmental health, leading to improved care access, sustainable growth, community fitness, and employer collaboratives. Her model to transform and expand privileges for APRNs working in collaboration with the medical staff in health care organizations has been widely disseminated. Dr. Clavelle has an AD in Nursing (University of Vermont), a BSN (Vermont College of Norwich University), an MS in Community Health Administration and Wellness Promotion (California College for Health Sciences), and Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) from Case Western Reserve University (Case), Frances Payne Bolton (FPB) School of Nursing.

Joanne recently completed a 4-year term as director-at large of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing, and has served as Chair of STTI’s Clinical Advisory Committee, editorial board for the Journal of Nursing Administration and Healthcare Executive, board of directors of Cancer Support Community (Phoenix), Advisory Committee of the American Nurses Association Barriers to RN Scope of Professional Issues Panel, and Premier Clinical Strategic Advisory Council. She is a member of Sigma, the American Nurses Association, American Organization of Nurse Executives, Colorado Nurses Association, and is certified in nursing administration, advanced, by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Dr. Clavelle was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 2019. She has received several recognition's, including the Arizona Top Women in Business Recognition from the Arizona Republic in 2015, and the Tribute to Women in Industry (TWIN) Award from the Women’s & Children’s Alliance in Boise, Idaho in 2010.

Dr. Clavelle is a well-known writer, presenter, and researcher, is published in several peer-reviewed professional journals and presented at state, national, and international conferences on transformational leadership, structural empowerment, professional governance, nurse practitioner/physician collaborative practice, the impact of technology on transforming nursing practice, and other topics. For the past 10 years, Dr. Clavelle has been working with a nationally recognized research team, developing a conceptual model on professional governance in organizations, and corollary measurement instrument: the Verran Professional Governance Scale.
